Ways to hydrogen

Hydrogen from renewable sources should become the energy source of the future! Research groups around the world are in a race to find the most climate-friendly production method.

Racing cars don't exactly stand for sustainable environmental protection. That is about to change: At the end of September 2019, a hydrogen-powered car with a total of almost 1000 hp started on the test track in the Ardennes - as a symbol for the climate-friendly and green future of mobility. The blue and white prototype sped the first 400 meters in 11 seconds, with nothing but pure water steaming out of its exhaust.

Because no CO2 is produced during combustion, the gas with the formula H2 is considered the energy source of the future. It is intended to temporarily store solar and wind energy, heat households as a substitute for natural gas, power airplanes and ships and make entire industries CO2-free. In November 2019, the federal government announced that it intends to adopt a national strategy for the "key raw material" by the end of the year. The federal states are literally competing for funding for new hydrogen centers, with which they hope to gain new economic power. Hamburg even announces the world's largest production site without a groundbreaking ceremony having taken place so far. The steel industry, which currently causes around seven percent of global CO2 emissions, wants to reduce its ecological footprint by using hydrogen instead of coal as a reducing agent. Gas should be available at every filling station in the next few years. Some expect nothing less than an age of infinite "clean" energy.

But the green beacon of hope has so far had a pitch black carbon footprint…
