Ornate Spiral Parquets
A bathroom can be tiled with completely unfamiliar patterns, using just one type of tile or a very small assortment. These parquets are neither periodic nor aperiodic in the manner of quasicrystals - rather, spirals emanate from a defined center.
Decades later, it's finally time to honor my history teacher's contribution to the advancement of geometry. The even flow of his speech gave me ample opportunity not only to follow his explanations, but also to have completely different thoughts at the same time. More importantly, unlike his peers, he even tolerated my translating these thoughts into carefully crafted drawings during class. So I was able to try out the different ways in which you can completely cover the plane with special diamonds. It was only later that I found out that such rhombuses - with opening angles of 36 and 72 degrees - play a crucial role in the theory of the famous Penrose parquets, which is why they are also called golden rhombuses.
I didn't make it to a real Penrose parquet back then at school; but it made a pattern that would today be called a radial parquet…
