Even as a child, Lee Reeves wanted to be a veterinarian. So when he was growing up, he would go to the local veterinary clinic on a Saturday morning to apply for a job. He waited three and a half hours until the head of the practice, Peter Malnati, had examined all the dogs and cats. When the vet finally came out of the treatment room, he asked the boy what he could do for him. Reeves, who had stuttered since he was three years "Image", had trouble answering the question. He stammered that he wanted to work in the clinic. But when Malnati asked him his name, he was speechless. The man finally grabbed a piece of paper and asked Reeves to write down his contact details. He mentioned that he unfortunately had no vacancies at the moment. "I remember walking out of the clinic that morning thinking my life was pretty much over," Reeves says. "Not only could I never become a vet - I wouldn't even get a job cleaning cages." alt="

It's been more than 50 years since the episode. Reeves, now 72, has become a well-known advocate for people with speech disabilities in the United States. For a long time he served as chairman of the National Stuttering Association. But he has never forgotten the frustration and embarrassment of that day. Most stutterers can probably relate similar experiences in their lives…
