To Antarctica via the Internet
Current reports and photos from the Arctic and Antarctic have been available on the Internet for a few days. The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven reports on its work in the polar regions on the World Wide Web. This special campaign on the occasion of the "Arctic-Antarctic" exhibition at the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn allows you to follow the migration paths of seals, albatrosses and polar bears "live" until April 19, 1998. Fresh out of the cold, new reports and insider information arrive weekly from the research stations, the "Polarstern" and other expeditions. Would you like to see how the new overwinterers at the Neumayer station are greeted by the old "Üwis" with a large banner? You can find this and other current pictures on the web. The AWI also offers school classes the opportunity to ask polar researchers about their work online.
Directly on the AWI homepage (https://www.awi-bremerhaven.de), those who are interested in other changing and current offers will get their money's worth. Space is reserved here for a "Photo of the Month", a particularly successful photograph from everyday scientific life, and "Sea Ice for Beginners", a journey through a living "ice desert".
The AWI website was completely renewed in 1997. The new offer is aimed equally at specialist colleagues all over the world, at ministries, research institutes and universities, but also at schools and everyone else who is fascinated by the Arctic and Antarctic. With the aim of providing all users with the information they want, the AWI provides a wide range of information on its website. Information on research projects and detailed scientific data are included, as are illustrated reports on the Institute's ships, research stations and aircraft.
The background to the special campaign "Current from the Arctic and Antarctic" is the "Arctic-Antarctic" exhibition in the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn. The AWI provided exhibits for the exhibition, contributions for the catalogue, scientific data, images and films for the multimedia program and provides additional up-to-date information on the Internet. The creation of the WWW pages for this action is supported by the European Commission, DG XIII, within the framework of the INFO-2000 program.
The Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven is part of the Helmholtz Association. It is dedicated to researching the polar regions and also takes a look at topics such as marine biology and climate change.
